The Met Costume Institute Gala 2014

The Met Costume Gala is one of those events that sparkles & shines for most fashionistas and is watched by stylists around the globe. For the rest of us, it’s an insight into the direction that the next season’s trends could possibly go in or hopefully won’t go in! You can check out Vogue.com to see all of their top 51 picks of the evening.  Some hits and some misses but who am I to judge!  Here are some of my faves!

Blake Lively in Gucci

I think she looks absolutely gorgeous! Great choice and she wears it well including Ryan Reynolds on her arm.

Diane Kruger in Hugo Boss

Diane looks so elegant, hints of Princess Grace!

Emma Stone in Thakoon

I love Emma Stone, she can rock a dress with color and no bra…seriously! Amazing. Also check her out in a lipsync battle with Jimmy Fallon on Youtube…epic!

Dita Von Teese in Zac Posen

Dita Von Teese in Zac Posen

Dita is the spokesmodel for “throw-back glamour”.  She looks so beautiful in this amazing Zac Posen gown.  Love the blush pink with the hint of fiery bombshell red at the hem…gorgeous!

Kim Kardashian in Lanvin

Kim Kardashian in Lanvin

Yes I did it…I chose a “Kimye” ensemble.  My apologies…but you have to admit she looks really beautiful, I love the richness of this midnight blue Lanvin dress. Her hair and makeup is perfect, not over-the-top, actually “Subtle”, not a word in her vocabulary I know.  It is a definate improvement from last year’s dress which was a huge flowering mess!

Wedding Jewellery to make you swoon…

I wanted to followup our last blog with some lovely pieces from the Zuka wedding jewellery collection that would be a perfect compliment to the dresses that were featured on our 5 hot trends for the season.

Truly, when you are picking pieces to work with your perfect dress, it is really about “less is more”…or is it? Everyone has their own personal taste when it comes to accessories. We like to help work through the choices according to neckline and amount of beading or embellishments but it really is about the dreams and wishes for each bride! We love to work with each one to ensure that their dreams for their day come true. Without further adieu, here are some exquisite options for jewels for these breathtaking dresses:

1.  Lace Sleeves:

Monique Lhuillier

This dress is amazing and to compliment the head-to-toe lace, a stunning pair of chandelier earrings like these “Eiffel Tower” vintage-inspired ones would be perfect.  The focal point is on the bride in this dress,  add these sparkly pair of earrings and they won’t detract from that overall glamorous look.

2. Detailed Backs:

Angel Sanchez

These linear Swarovski crystal baroque pendant earrings are perfect for this dress.   The action, so to speak, is in the plunging back with the rhinestone beading and the incredible ruffle details.  For a dress like this the addition of a cuff bracelet or two would be amazing.  For one of our lovely brides, Jenna, we did two of these incredible Swarovski and Czech glass bead rhinestone bracelets. You can see the bracelets in our accolades section.

3. Eye-catching Embellishments:

For this dress it’s all about the sparkle. There is an option to style this dress with more of a demure wedding jewellery option because of the all-over beading and detail but sometimes it can also support that special statement earring and bracelet to match. Above are two earring options and a double-strand freshwater pearl and Swarovski crystal bracelet that would look stunning

4. Luxe Layering:

Oscar de la Renta

With delicate sheer tulle and organza, layering is a very popular trend.  With this style of dress and when the wrap is removed there is a wonderful canvas of a neckline that you can add a necklace with a tiny earring or go for it with a statement earring.

5. Above-the-knee Dresses:

As the above-the-knee dresses are making a comeback so is the vintage-inspired throwback to glamour wedding jewellery that go right along with it.  For this modern twist to a full length gown, you can afford to play boldly with your jewels.  I think over-the-top glamour is in order and so here are two examples of some earrings that could work beautifully…keeping in mind they are still bold but yet oh so romantic in the same breath.

As picking your dress for your special day is such a huge and emotional journey…the time you take to pick the jewels that will compliment your dress should be a fun adventure as well.  We love to work with brides and make their vision come to life.  You can choose to work with us online or during a personal one-on-one appointment.  We love to create from what we have or something totally one-of-a-kind.  We enjoy designing for your whole party as well, so make it a fun afternoon of tea and macarons and we can turn your dreams into a reality.  xoxo

5 Wedding Dress Trends From the Spring/Summer 2014 Runway Collections

When the trees start to bud and the flowers start to bloom you know it’s time to start thinking about Spring & Summer weddings. This week at New York’s Spring/Summer Bridal Market, designers sent their latest delicate creations down the runways. Looking through all the collections online or through lookbooks, some specific details kept emerging. I’ve compiled a list of the 5 strong trends that are making an impact on this season’s dresses. Be ready to swoon, or if you’ve already had a wedding…perhaps re-new your vows?

1. Lace Sleeves:

Monique Lhuillier

Delicate lace used for many of these dresses ranged from Chantilly, Venise, Guipure or Schiffli. We can thank the designers’ homage to Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge for this romantic trend that looks to be with us for awhile to come.

2. Detailed Backs:

Rita Vinieris-Rivini

Designers created open-back keyholes, architectural pleating and modern trains to keep the eye on you, not only as you enter the room but as you dance and twirl during your first dance or exit throwing your bouqet over your shoulder! C’est Magnifique!

3. Eye-catching Embellishments:

Kenneth Pool

It’s about the sparkle, the intricate details from beading, sequins, lace or 3-dimensional flowers that are blooming and popping up all throughout the collections this season.

4. Luxe Layering:

Oscar de la Renta

Reem Acra

Sheer tulle and organza wraps were floating all over the runways this season. Reem Acra embroidered lovely messages of love in silver thread on her delicate wraps that once on were barely there like a whisper.

5. Above-the-knee Dresses:

Monique Lhuillier

Marchesa

This coming season, above-the-knee dresses are making a comeback.  With a throw-back glamorous feel, they offer a fresh new option to that of a floor length gown. With the subtle addition of lace, Swarovski beaded necklines or innovative wraps of tulle they still make a spectacular impact.

There are so many wonderful and magical dresses out there that you will definitely find the one that speaks to you. In the next blog I will show you some lovely options for jewels that will compliment these dresses.  xoxo

Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk

I’ve always been addicted to anything “Gaultier” and after making a pilgrimage to his flagship store at 44, avenue Georges V in Paris i knew my fate was sealed. So when I found out about this new show in London I had to add this to my wishlist! “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” is currently showing at London’s Barbican Centre. This is an amazing show conceived by Gaultier himself and is gorgeously curated over two floors.

Please enjoy the above pictures that were shot by Adorn-london’s Maia Adams who checked out the show and was simply amazed. I love his use of film strips for bangles and the tin cans in the necklace! This is a breath-taking collection that covers so many areas and decades. One certainly not to be missed if you are lucky enough to be in London til August 25th! xo

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! It is amazing at how fast time flies, where did our holiday season go? I’m hard at work in the studio designing the new Spring collection. What does that mean? Music, chocolate and big pots of amazing tea! The Jambox is blasting away and as usual soundtracks are my fave go-to, right now listening to American Hustle.

Channeling all of that edgy, smoky 70’s vibe for this first throw-back collection! Here is a pic of my vision board, a collage of golds & silvers:

american hustle SS 2104

Since I am so partial to purples…I was SO excited to see the new Pantone Color of the season:

Radiant Orchid

Orchids are one of my favorite flowers, my thoughts are to mix variant tones of this beautiful color with silvers. Here is my vision board for this next collection:

Orchid SS 2014

I’m planning on this new year to be a year of change for Zuka, a journey of self-discovery in many ways. A more simpler and stripped-down aesthetic.  This last collection fits in perfectly with that zen approach, Oydessy.  Here is what I’m getting excited about! I love the sand-blasted hues of beige and dove greys…ethereal:

Oydessy 2014 SS

As change is on the fore-front for this new year’s journey, many exciting new twists and turns for Zuka will play out!  Stay tuned for our Spring Collection pics on the site and an exciting event to launch the new collection. Hugs…xoxo

Spring 2014 Inspirations

Just back from a lovely quick visit to the city that never sleeps…Vegas.  Had a wonderful visit with family from Denmark and also found little bits of inspiration despite the rain!  Loved the pops of color in the glorious large flower balls and parasols at The Wynn and the beautiful glass ceiling in the lobby at the Bellagio.

Fall Holiday 2013 ready to Launch!

Nomadic Jewel logo pic

The first of the three collections is Nomadic Jewel…think Game of Thrones…gorgeous teals, greens and woods on silver metal.   I love this particular collection for it’s raw and textured pieces.  This whole Fall collection really has a medieval feel to it, is it my obsession with Game of Thrones or do I just love this era?

Renaissance pic 1

This collection is called Renaissance…rich tones of hunter green jade stones, regal purple faceted Czech glass and amethyst faceted teardrop stones on antique gold metal.  Once again medieval but more royal than raw.  It’s beautiful and elegant.

Anarchy logo pic 1

This is Anarchy, dark and mysterious…ink black onyx stones, black metal crosses and leather barbed wire.  An edgy look, part medieval…part rock.  Of course always in need of some sparkle, the collection is sprinkled with Swarovski silver night crystals in various sizes.  All of the metal is gunmetal.

Once Fall Holiday comes out it’s time to think about Spring…will keep you posted about some trends, themes and colors that are making it’s way into the new year.  xoxo

The Bikini Debate

Summer is here and we all know what that means…It’s beach season!  For some women, the work outs during the winter have paid off as it’s also bikini season.  But, recently there has been an increase in the “Bikini Debate.”

It was announced several days ago that, Vietri Sul Mare’s Mayor has banned women from wearing bikinis outside of the beach areas.  This is because he deemed it inappropriate to be showing that much skin in town.  Now, for those of you who don’t know, Vietri Sul Mare is located on the southern coast of Italy and literally means “Vietri on the sea.”  Hm. Interesting.  Hate to break it to you, Mister Mayor, but it seems to me like your town is built on the beach.

The biggest controversy over the bikini that I can take note of is the Jessica Rey incident.  Rey has designed her own line of one piece “modest” swimsuits and to help promote it, she delivered this speech.

If I’m to be honest here, I actually like her speech.  It was well done.  Organized and specific.  I don’t necessarily agree with certain points, such as our “innate” need to be “modest” or what the implications the research in which “scantily-dressed” women were viewed as objects propose.

Her speech sparked a huge debate.  I’ve read a lot of blogs and articles on this topic.  But it seems to me, that a lot of the “pro-modesty” blogs propagate the mentality of “victim-blaming”.  I’ve read a lot of “bikinis are a temptation to men” and “think how hard it is for them to control themselves.”  I think we need to give men more credit here.  They’re not animals who are unable to control their actions.  Decent men exist…and guess what, despite all the complaints, they are EVERYWHERE.

But here are my two cents.  “Modest” or “exposed”, if you like it, if it makes you feel comfortable, then heck, dress so.  Just make sure you look good. ;)

Stop using men as a scapegoat.  If they’re the only “reason” you’ve got for condemning how much the bikini exposes, then you need a better argument.  Besides, according to my friend, she’s a bigger danger to half naked men than half naked women are to most men.  (So, let’s discuss those thongs and speedos, eh, guys?)

And both sides need to stop the “too ugly” reasons.  One pieces and bikinis are both cute.  Here’s proof.
